The National Youth Science Foundation hosted the first session of the Youth Science Leadership Institute (YSLI) in 2002 as the North American Youth Science Leadership Institute and the second session of the YSLI between 11 July 2006 and 26 July 2006.

The following countries (number of delegates) participated in the 2006 YSLI: United States (25), Brazil (5), Canada (4), Peru (4), Mexico (4), Venezuela (4), Argentina (3), Nicaragua (3), Bolivia (3), Panama (3), Dominican Republic (3), Colombia* (2), Jamaica (2), Barbados (2), and Trinidad and Tobago (2).

The Youth Science Leadership Institute is an intense two week-long immersion into science and leadership for young scientists from throughout the Western Hemisphere. In a rustic setting, students will be challenged academically in exciting lectures and hands-on studies, and will have opportunities to push themselves physically in an extensive outdoor program.

The mission of the Institute is to develop a community of young leaders who are empowered to make scientifically sound, socially responsible decisions about natural resource management, economic development, and democratic governance, balancing local, national, and regional needs to maximize goodwill, prosperity, and security throughout the hemisphere.

Students from throughout the Americas are invited to participate in this all-expenses paid program. They will learn about issues of concern to the countries and peoples of the Western Hemisphere, develop leadership skills, gain understanding and appreciation for the great outdoors, and build friendships that will last a lifetime.
